Prayer is a key component of the Christian faith, although many of us fall short of it. To return to the basics, prayer can be thought of as a spiritual conversation with God, a way for us to express our ideas, emotions, and desires to Him. It is a means of seeking direction, finding consolation, and deepening our relationship with the divine. Prayer is important in the Bible because it aligns us with God’s will, encourages His intervention, and acknowledges our need for Him. Recognizing these fundamental reasons, we are encouraged to prioritize and cultivate our prayer life to develop a deeper relationship with God.
To Be A Christian Without Prayer
Being a Christian without prayer is equivalent to being alive without breathing. Did you realize that God’s kingdom is inconceivable apart from prayer? Without the effort of someone’s Spirit-led prayers, the unreached will never hear the lovely name of Jesus. Whatever seems on the surface, nothing of eternal value is ever released without someone, somewhere, PRAYING. Because prayer is often a HIDDEN work done in the SECRET closet, many people draw incorrect judgments. Often, the more visible and external ministries of preaching or administration are given credit for what has truly been done through prayer.
The Significance of Prayer
Many, if not all, of us have been taught in church that prayer is our primary means of communicating with God. That is correct; nevertheless, when we do not pray, we forfeit many of the blessings that can only be obtained via a growing and deep relationship with God. Prayer is vital because it keeps us connected to God. When we pray, we are giving our hearts to Him, allowing Him to operate in and through us.
All of God’s greatest men and women in the Bible prayed. Many of them prayed throughout the day. Many of them prayed at difficult times as well as moments of great joy and happiness. What makes us think we can work our way to greatness without praying if all of these men and women we revere as Christians prayed?
Prayer is more than merely talking to God for five to ten minutes. It’s more than merely kneeling in church in front of the altar. It’s more than merely praying to God. Prayer is a two-way communication since it is our way of speaking WITH God. We listen to God when we pray. We can hear Him. We listen to His lovely and life-giving voice. And we learn about His heart for us through His word.
What Happens When We Don’t Pray?
With all of this said, perhaps you should pray. To add to the incentive you may be feeling right now, let me briefly list some unwelcome and unpleasant consequences of not praying. I’ll only cover one passage in this article: In James 4:1-5, it reads,
“Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members? You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously”?
1) We have difficulties.
James reminds us that since we lack what we desire, we covet and even battle to obtain it for ourselves! This is why robberies and thefts occur.
Consider this: your neighbor owns some items that you cannot afford. As a result, you crave it and may be motivated to do anything to obtain it or something similar. However, when you pray, you might give God that desire as well as the feeling of covetousness that He does not want. When you pray, you request God and then wait for Him to respond. God can provide you with whatever you require and desire. He understands you better than you know yourself, and as a result, He can make you happier than you can ever be.
2) We do not receive what we require.
We do not receive since we do not inquire. Those who ask receive, those who seek find, and those who knock will have the door opened for them, according to Jesus. We shouldn’t expect the Lord to give us anything we didn’t ask for.
Of course, God enjoys surprising His people with His blessings. But He desires that we open our hearts to Him and pray with Him. And when we pray to Him and get near to Him, we will learn His character and become dependent on Him, which He enjoys and lavishly rewards.
3) We separate ourselves from God.
To be honest, if we love God and have faith in Him, why wouldn’t we pray? We remove ourselves from God if we simply devote our time and attention to our worldly ambitions and dreams!
I understand that some people struggle to find the words to pray because they are burdened with so many problems. That is an even better time to pray to God! Consider Psalm 77:2-4, a psalm written by a troubled person:
“I sought the Lord in my trouble; my hand was stretched out in the night without ceasing; my soul refused to be comforted.” I was distressed because I remembered God; I complained because my spirit was overwhelmed. (Selah) You keep my eyelids open; I’m so distressed that I can’t speak.”
Turn your problems over to God. Not praying will not help; nevertheless, praying will. Why alienate yourself from God when you are in desperate need of Him?
How Prayer Can Help Us in Our Daily Lives
I know I’ve already mentioned numerous ways prayer is important, but here are 10 ways prayer can benefit us in our daily lives:
- Prayer can assist us in focusing on what is important.
- Prayer can help us remain hopeful during difficult circumstances.
- Prayer can help us feel more deeply connected to God.

- Prayer can assist us in becoming more compassionate individuals.
- Prayer can provide us with strength in difficult circumstances.
- Prayer can assist us in keeping our minds and ideas clear.
- Prayer is a means of communicating with Jesus and requesting guidance and assistance in our lives.
The point is, that prayer can only accomplish all of this (and more) because of who Jesus Christ is! He is the One who can help you focus and discover peace, comfort, healing, strength, and purpose, among other things. Prayer is essential if we want to grow in our relationship with Jesus.
