What is Covered
Australian Unity offers its customers a wide range of health insurance policies, covering singles, couples, families, and overseas visits via its hospital-only, extras-only, and combined cover plans.
Whichever cover you are seeking, Australian Unity offers plans on a range of low to top coverage–which includes basic plans, mid-level cover, and comprehensive cover. Depending on which level of coverage you choose will determine how much coverage you receive, and what is included.
As Australian Unity is a member-owned company, it prides itself on giving its members the best value for money in terms of its policies. However, of all the contributions Australian Unity receives, only 79.2% are returned to its customers via benefits. Other top insurers offer a percentage of returned benefits in the 90% range.
Wait time
Like all health insurance companies, Australian Unity has set waiting periods that apply to certain claims across all of its policies, regardless of the level of coverage you choose. This means you can’t receive benefits for the claim until the waiting period has passed.
For hospital cover, Australian Unity members have a wait time of two months for most conditions. This waiting period extends to 12 months for pre-existing conditions, pregnancy, and birth.
For extras–whether on an extras-only plan or a combined plan–there is a two-month wait period for physical therapies, such as physiotherapy and general dental. For optical, the waiting period is six months, whereas, for major dental, the wait time is 12 months.
No gap policy
Across all of its services, Australian Unity has a no-gap policy average of 92%. This means there are no out-of-pocket costs incurred by the policyholder when receiving certain care or services.
Australian Unity also has a ‘No Gap Dental Network’, allowing members with eligible cover to attend any of its partnered providers across the country
About Australian Unity Health Insurance
Australian Unity is one of Australia’s longest-running #wellbeing companies, offering its customers health and care services since its origins, which date back to the 1840s.
The Australian Unity as it exists now was officially formed in 1993 through a merger of the Australian Natives Association Friendly Society and the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows. In the 2000s, Australian Unity expanded rapidly through mergers and acquisitions, including that of Lifeplan Australia Friendly Society and Grand United NSW.
All of this growth has enabled Australian Unity to become what it is today: a company of more than 7000 employees, serving more than 700,000 members and customers across the nation.
Currently, its market share of the total health insurance pool is 2.5%.
Along with its insurance offerings, Australian Unity also partners with Deakin University to develop the Australian Unity Wellbeing Index, measuring the subjective personal well-being of Australian individuals across seven domains—health, relationships, the standard of living, personal safety, achieving in life, community connectedness and future security
