About Purpose of Position: Research Professional Nurse Jobs at UCT

The Division of Allergology and Clinical Immunology at the Department of Medicine, University of Cape Town, requires applications for a Research Professional Nurse on a 12 monthly Fixed Term Contract based at Walter Sisulu University (Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital, Mthatha, Eastern Cape).

Together with the Division of Dermatology, the Division of Allergology and Immunology at the Department of Medicine, University of Cape Town has established a team to develop a registry and biorepository of African HIV-related Immune-Mediated Adverse Drug Reactions (IM-ADRs), most notably Severe Cutaneous Adverse Drug Reactions (SCAR).

The purpose of this team is to define the epidemiology of treatment-limiting SCAR in SA through the expansion of a registry and biorepository of African-HIV-related SCAR, to define the genetic risk of these patients through clinical research and laboratory investigations and to determine the long-term health outcomes of SCAR patients.

These aims are to be approached through the IMARI Study, Immune-mediated adverse drug reactions to HIV and TB treatments in South Africa: predict, prevent and improve long-term outcomes. A partnership with Walter Sisulu University has enabled the expansion of the project to additional sites including Nelson Mandela Academic, Frere, and Cecilia Makiwane Hospitals, Eastern Cape The successful incumbent will be a part of this team and will be primarily based at Walter Sisulu University (Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital, Mthatha). Travel for collaboration and research activities at East London sites including Frere and Cecilia Makiwane Hospitals is also required.

UCT Research Professional Nurse Job Requirements

UCT Research Professional Nurse job requirements are the following:-

Minimum Requirements:
• Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC)
• NQF level 7 (Degree or Diploma in General Nursing Science)
• Based in Mthatha or surrounds or willingness to relocate
• Keen interest in Research (particularly Allergy, Immunology, and Dermatology)
• Computer Literacy (proficiency in Microsoft Office and electronic data capture)
• Valid Driver’s License
• Excellent organizational skills

Other Preferable Requirements:
• Valid Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Certification or willingness to attain
• Clinical Research Experience
• Dispensing Licence
• Bilingual (English and isiXhosa or Afrikaans)

Research Professional Nurse Job Responsibility for UCT Job Vacancy

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
• Recruitment at research sites
• Screen participants for inclusion into studies using specified inclusion criteria
• Consent, examination, interview, electronic database data documentation of participants.
• Scheduling of participants for clinical examination and follow-up (telephone and clinic visits)
• Perform all delegated study procedures, e.g. collect laboratory specimens
• Perform phlebotomy procedures and insertion of peripheral IV lines
• Prepare laboratory specimens for shipping or transporting to the laboratory
• Monitor, manage and maintain study stock levels.
• Management of participant records: maintain, retrieve, and file according to study visits. This includes
laboratory and procedure results
• Maintain applicable study logs (screening, enrolment, participant confidential identification log, AE tracking, etc.)
• Travel between Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital, Mthatha and Frere and Cecilia Makiwane Hospitals, East London
• Support and collaboration with East London study sites including regular site visits.
