The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) offers financial assistance to those individuals who need it the most. These individuals receive social grants which allow them to purchase basic goods and services every month while they are unemployed or earning very little income.

Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant applicants need to ensure they meet all the eligibility criteria for the grant they are applying for. In addition to the application, supporting documents will need to be submitted.

Unfortunately, not all applications are accepted. However, applicants are welcome to appeal the application decision if they feel they were unfairly excluded.

How To Do An SRD Grant Appeal For July 2023

  1. Visit the SRD website.
  2. Enter your identification number.
  3. Enter the cellphone number you used during the application process.
  4. Select “Send Pin”.
  5. Insert the Pin and click “Submit”.
  6. Select the month that you are appealing for.
  7. Click on the drop-down arrow to choose the reason for your appeal application from the options provided.
  8. Select “Submit” to complete the appeal application process.

Sassa reminds appeal applicants to submit an SRD grant appeal for each month their grant application was rejected. Grant appeals should be submitted within 90 days of receiving notification about the outcome of the application.

The Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA) finalizes SRD grant appeals. Appeals are finalized within 60 to 90 days.

Decisions made by the ITSAA are final. However, appeal applicants who are unhappy with the outcome of their appeal may approach the high court for judicial review within 180 days of receiving the ITSAA’s decision.

Grant applicants can appeal to the Minister of Social Development in writing, explaining why they disagree with Sassa’s decision to reject their grant application. The staff at the Sassa office will advise unsuccessful grant applicants on the process to follow to submit the appeal application.
